Ban.garay is a movement from the cantata Jandamarra: Sing for Country. For more info, find out here

Composer's Notes:

This piece tells of a moment of triumph for the Bunuba people as Jandamarra sings the snake spirit Yilimbirri Unggud back to his spring. This is a sign of the country being healed through the power of song. The healing of the land, the power of song and respect for culture are all strong thematic threads explored throughout the cantata and are brought into focus in this movement. It is both reflective and celebratory in tone.

Analysis: Main Ideas

Pitch: Use of modes (lydian, aeolian) as well as modal mixture. Harmonically dense with use of suspensions and dissonance. Use of wide interval leaps to illustrate word painting ("spear across the sky" has a soaring lyrical line).

Duration: Use of ostinato as accompaniment (eg."ban.garay" at the start) canonically imitation between voices, meter changes. Dotted crotchet/quaver ostinato developed throughout movement.

Tone Colour: Different vocal registers used to illustrate different moods - higher registers for a more hopeful and celebratory tone, while warmer, lower register generally used to highlight softer, sweeter moments.

Texture: Canonic entry of voices used throughout this movement. Mostly homophonic, at times polyphonic (3 different lines going on).

Dynamics & Expressive Techniques: Starts soft, dynamics oscillates frequently between varying levels of soft and loud, with create climax point is at G (ff).
